December Luncheon

Please join us at the New Haven Lawn Club on December 14th at 12PM for lunch and "Worldmaking in the Middle East: From the Great War to Gaza," a presentation by Jonathan Wyrtzen.

Jonathan Wyrtzen is Associate Professor of Sociology, International Affairs, and History (by courtesy) at Yale University. His research engages a set of related thematic areas that include empire and colonialism, state formation and non-state forms of political organization, ethnicity and nationalism, and religion and socio-political action in the Middle East and North Africa and elsewhere. He has published two award-winning books, Making Morocco: Colonial Intervention and the Politics of Identity (Cornell, 2015) and Worldmaking in the Long Great War: How Local and Colonial Struggles Shaped the Modern Middle East (Columbia, 2022).

His current project, "Nation in Empire," explores how spatial and symbolic boundaries are recurrently drawn and contested in relation to phases of overland and overseas imperial expansion and contraction, using the United States, French, and British empires as companion comparative cases.
