The Burning Earth

Please join us at the New Haven Lawn Club on Thursday November 13th, 2025 at 12PM for lunch and Professor Sunil Amrith's talk on his latest book, The Burning Earth.

A three-course plated luncheon will be served. Free parking is available at the New Haven Lawn Club, which is handicap and ADA Accessible, and on the Yale Shuttle and CT Transit bus lines.

Sunil Amrith is the Renu and Anand Dhawan Professor of History at Yale University, with a secondary appointment at the Yale School of the Environment. He serves as the Henry R. Luce Director of the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies and as Yale’s Vice Provost for International Affairs, overseeing key international programs and advising university leadership on global engagement. His research explores the movements of people and the ecological processes linking South and Southeast Asia, extending to global environmental history.

A MacArthur Fellow and recipient of the Toynbee, Fukuoka, and Heineken Prizes, Amrith is the author of The Burning Earth (2024), an acclaimed environmental history of the modern world centered on the Global South. His earlier works—Unruly Waters and Crossing the Bay of Bengal—have received multiple awards and wide recognition. A Singapore native and Cambridge graduate, Amrith continues to study the entwined histories of climate, migration, and development.
